A unique mentoring program. In association with Project O

‘It was March last year when I exited a huge helicopter from 2800 feet with the top skydivers in the world landing on a crowded beach in Vietnam that I realised something. After landing and setting a new Guinness world record for skydiving on six continents in a week which would land me on live BBC television (along with connecting me to key individuals around the world) - I realised that I was in fact living my dream. I reminded myself that just ten years earlier, not only did I have a phobia of flying, but I was one of life’s biggest drop outs that struggled to even get out of bed’

If you want to live your dream then this is for you!

Your life will soon expire. Sooner- much sooner than you anticipate!
So what will you do with this short term of your natural life?
Self victory is vital or as someone once put it,
Personal mastery is mission critical!
The biggest battle you will ever fight is the one with yourself!

This is a unique programme for nurturing and facilitating people to maximise their potentials in life through coaching,

This is a life mentoring program. It is a life training centre operated independently to Project O. However one of the aims other than the personal development of its participants is to utilise this internship programme to promote Project O and to directly raise funds through the skydive sponsorship. The program costs the charity nothing and in the process significantly raises not only the profile but funds directly through sponsorship.
In addition to the accommodation costs you will need to raise 1000 pounds minimum (there is no maximum)each through sponsorship for your tandem skydive that you will execute on your first day of the course in the spectacular valley of a thousand hills here in Kwa zulu natal, South Africa!
Altogether – 12 interns bringing 12,000 pounds through this sponsorship (per month) can and will explode the work of project O to new heights. The focus of this particular income will be on sponsoring children directly, purchasing new quad bikes to reach them and training new staff to teach the children. When the internship reaches its full capacity we will be adding 600 new sponsored children each year! Come and have a life changing experience and permanently change the lives of hundreds of orphans as a direct result! Also contributing towards the building projects.
This is a 3 week course. We have crammed much in to this course that could easily have run for 3-4 months to open it up to a large number of people that just can’t afford to take off 4 months!

Once in a while!

Every once in a while you meet a person worth investing in with out limits.

After interviewing for a PA position Project O has found such a person. Her name is Liz and her story is remarkable. She fled WAR TORN RWANDA as a child with 'bullets flying over my head' she says.

A decade later after spending years in KENYA and Johannesburg working as a PA for a large company she found her way down to Kwa zulu natal.

It's amazing what a decade can do!

She is a unique find and definitely worth the investing in. We require the immediate funding necessary to keep her on full time staff. Experienced in marketing and fund raising she would be a huge asset to the work here and in reality within a month or two would fully cover her own salary and contribute significantly to our operations. Not to mention she will free the director up considerably to do what only he can do at this stage.

Please consider fully funding Liz's salary to keep her on board and in the process - continually developing the work of Project O!

We have started to put the roof on the children's home. We are thatching our roof and we have the top thatcher in South Africa doing the job for us! We are so excited this job is more complicated than most as we have had to design a metal frame work to hold the wind turbines and solar panels in place. They will sit directly on the pitch of th

e house and are quite heavy. Here are a few photos of the progress. Not long now and the family will be able to move in.

So many of our orphans have disabilities. The main one that we come across is Cerebral Palsy. We have 8 orphans with this condition and it really breaks my heart. If these children were in a western country they would be well cared for, they would be in schools that help them to learn and grow mentally, they would be in physio to help their muscles and joints to be more limber. They would have interaction with children who are in the same situation as they are and they would have a chance at having a life.
The children here have NONE of this.They get to lie on a mat on the floor, ignored by everyone. Not touched, not talked to, not loved.
When we go to visit these children I really struggle to fight back the tears. I get down with them and hold their hand. I talk to them in my broken Zulu and I pray for them.
How do they respond? They laugh and smile and try to talk back to me. It really doesn't take much to make them feel special, but sadly the families of these orphans just don't get it and this breaks my heart.
We need people to come and volunteer, to come and spend time with these families and teach them how to make the child's life better. We need physiotherapists to come and teach the Grandmothers and aunts how to touch and manipulate the children's arms and legs.

This is Sindi and she is now living with us for 5 days a week. Sindi and her 3 brothers lost their parents to AIDS 2 years ago and have been living with their grand-mother and great grand-mother ever since.Before their parents passed away the children were able to go to a good English speaking school, where they were getting a decent education, however when their parents passed away the children had to move in with their grandmothers who live in a VERY rural community. The school there is very bad and the level of education incredible poor, in fact after spending time in these schools I wonder if it is even worth the children going!! its really that bad!Sindi and 2 of her brothers now have sponsors and Sindi's sponsor is a lady from Northern Ireland called Catherine. While Catherine was here visiting she had a chance to spend time with Sindi and talked about school with her. Sindi told us how that kids in the rural school hate her because she speaks and writes English and because she wants to be a doctor when she is older.Jealousy is a cruel thing and Sindi dreaded going to school every day because of the other children.Catherine's heart went out to this beautiful, bright little girl and she decided to pay for Sindi to go to one of the best schools in the area!!!!!!!!What an amazing gift to give this little girl.Yesterday was Sindi's 1st day at school and she LOVED it!As her home is too far from the new school Sindi is now going to be staying with us 5 days a week and going home at weekends. We are so excited to have her with us. She is one of the sweetest girls that I have ever met and I am so excited to see her grow.Catherine thankyou so much for making this dream come true for Sindi. We love and appreciate you and cant wait for your next visit!!!!!!xxx

HI guys.....so here in the problem. We need to get Amahle into Pre-School asap but Hle can not afford to pay for it. We really cant afford to do it either so I am making a request to all my old Soul Action friends, my BCC friends and any one else who feels like they would like to help this little girl start her education, PLEASE help us.Amahle turned 2 last september and is such a bright little girl. Hle really wants to give her the best education but just doesnt have the money to do so and is really stressed out about this.For those of you who have been to stay with us...remember the little pre-school across the road from us? Its called Bears. Well that is the pre-school that we want to get her into. I called them today and they told me that it would be R850 a month. Thats about 60 Pounds or about $122 a month.If I can get a few people to give on a monthly basis that would be an awesome help. On Sunday we were invited to a Golf club for the day to raise awareness for Project O. It was for the Club Captain's Cup so there were many top business men there. We started with sky divers landing on the 17th green, and then a presentation from Martin on Project O. The day was a great success and we hope that we can take the work of Project O all over the country with future golf day presentation.

Yesterday was such a great day. We were very busy! We had a compactor to flatten and compact the foundations and some of our friends from church came to the valley with us to help plant the spinach seedlings that they had grown for Project O. We had alot of fun and got loads of work done at the same time.

We have started the building project and now we are looking for teams or individuals to come and help build. As a volunteer you will help with the building work taking food to orphans and help with teaching our life-skills with the children. We are looking for people with and without experience, all ages, all backgrounds!!

This month saw the launch of our much anticipated mobile clinic.

A couple of weeks ago I was out delivering food to some orphans. As I was driving in the landy up a very steep hill, I came across a 70 year old grandmother who was helping her daughter home from the clinic. The daughter is dying from AIDS and can no longer walk. The grandmother had helped her into a wheelbarrow and wheeled her the whole way there, waited for a few hours to be seen by the doctor and was now wheeling her back up the hill.

When I asked her how long it had taken her to get her to the clinic she told me that 5 hours was the time it took her to get to the point that she was at now and that she still had a long way to go.

I put them both in the landrover and drove them home, it just took me a few minutes , it would have taken her a couple of hours!

This is one of the reasons that we need a new Landrover!!!!

It is also one of the reasons that we have started up our mobile clinic.

We have alot of basic medical supplies i.e. bandages, antiseptic cream, vitamins ect. It is all loaded up into the back of a quad and one of our staff members takes a trained nurse or doctor to the people who can not get to the clinic. We have a nurse from the UK staying with us at the moment and we are looking for more people to volunteer their time and skills to help these people in need.

We need people who can teach the women how to care for their babies and people who can minister first aid. Nurses, midwives, doctors we need to to come and visit!

Joe was down at the land early at 7am with dad to help clear the land as we prepare to start the building.

The winter fires (wild fires rip across the bush here every winter wiping out the wild vegetation) spread through here last week making the job of the jcb’s alot easier as now they could see where they were going.

Sad News............today our Landrover finally passed away!

Her gearbox dropped out the bottom and the accelerator cable has had it. It will cost us more than it is worth to get it fixed and we have been offered a new one for £2500. When I say "new" I mean 20 years younger than the one we have!!!!! This car will be snapped up quickly unless we act this week!
Without this, the homes and orphans will be losing out!
A cash donation for the above amount will see us through

In fact a donation of 12,000 pounds will buy us an almost new vehicle to do the work at hand- we are in need!

Building begins!
At last the project O building project has begun.
Its been a long time in the waiting as we worked our way through the red tape etc.

We have had to make our own road through the bush approx 400 metres.
This will take some time as we have to flatten trees and bushes along the way but will result in us having our own private access road to our homes and projects down near the dam.
The fences are ready to be erected as soon as the JCB’s move out, and we can't wait!!!

Creche is crying out for help.

Sabtha and her kiddies singing a song.

2 weeks ago I took a trip to Cato Manor squatter camp. We visited a Pastor there who is from Zambia. He now lives in South Africa with his wife and 3 children and has a small church in the squatter camp. Pastor Simon and his wife Sabtha love their community very much but 2 months ago during the xenophobic attacks here in South Africa members of the local community dragged them out of their home in the middle of the night and stole all their belongings. They also smashed all the windows of the church and stole every thing from inside, including all the items that they used for their creche.

Every day Sabtha has up to 22 children dropped off at the church to spend the day while the mother s go to work. some come as early as 6:30 am and are there until 7pm. The babies range from 2 months to 6 years and all are adorable!!!!

My first visit was quite hard for me as the creche was just a small room crammed with babies and nothing for them to do.

No toys, no beds, nothing for them to do. many come with only one nappy and are soaked through, no bottles are sterilized and the formula is made cold as there is no way to heat it.

Sabtha has one lady helping her, but that is not enough and she was very tired.

Yesterday I went back to visit and take some donations that we have been given for babies.

Sabtha was so happy to see us and I had the opportunity to sit down and have a chat with her. She really loves these little ones and is trying to do her best to care for them so that their mothers can go out and try to earn a living, but she is frustrated that there is so little that she can do with what they have. There are a few toys (most are not age appropriate) and a couple of crayons but not enough for all the children to use and there was nothing for the babies to do other than lie on a mat on the floor.

Sabtha wants the children to learn and grown, she teaches them basic English and sings with them. She is a wonderful, generous woman who has a compassion for these little ones.

When our team from BCC were here one of the team members called Emma decided to do something to help and went out and got 200 nappies for the creche. The nappies cost about 10 pounds and have already made such a difference to Sabtha and certainly the babies who are wearing them, no more wet bums!!!

Helping the Helpless.

This month we had a team of 18 come and visit from Bournemouth Community Church to spend 2 weeks with us. They came bringing childrens clothing, medical supplies and willing hearts to help and love these children.

We had a great time and made some friends for life! The team was very diverse in age, life style and talents and all had different things to bring to the table when it came to working with the children and Project O staff. We laughed, we cried we worked them hard!!!!! All came willing , all left changed.

I'm pretty sure that many of them have fallen in love with South Africa and its people, and most have promised to come back.

It is so exciting for us to have so many people come here to visit and to watch as they have their hearts broken and their lives rocked and then to see them catch the vision and run with it. This team have really encouraged us as an organization and as individuals.

We are so thankful for their love and support and can't wait for next years team!

Bike race!!!!!

On the 22nd of june four of our orphans and two of our Project O staff rode in the Kwa Ximba bike race. The bike Race was 10km and our guys all came in the top ten!!!!

Agreement, 13 years old and Khayelihle, 15 years old have all been orphaned due to Hiv/Aids.

They have been members of our bike club for a while now and are some of our stronger riders which is why we picked them for the race.

They had a great day and the fact that they came in the top ten was amazing as there were around 100 people in the race!

Crisis Center really cares!

A couple of months ago we had a team from Living Waters Missions crisis center come and visit us. God has really put our organization on their hearts and wanted to help in any way that they could.

Diane and her team came by one day and we all went to the Valley to visit some of our orphans. With them they bought food, toys, clothes and Zulu childrens books. We went to see a number of our orphans and the team had a chance to bless these children with the gifts that they had brought with them.

We had such a great day, the children loved their gifts and were so happy to see that some people care about them and their family. The team prayed with each family and I know that this was a huge blessing to each and every person under the sound of those prayers. The day was full of joy and laughter.

And I cant wait for their next visit in august.

Thankyou Diane and the team of faithful friends for coming to bless these children and thier families, I want you to know that not only did you bless them but you also blessed myself and the Project O staff. Thankyou for the encouragement and love that you have shown to us in the short time that we have spent together.

Teddy Bears all round!

We have some friends in the UK who had a great idea of how to bless our orphans. One day while cleaning out her toys Laura Cowen saw that she just had too many teddy bears and didnt know what to do with them. So after talkng with her dad they came up with the idea of sending them to our orphans here at Project O. When we recieved the box stuffed with bears and other soft toys we were so excited. The orphans that we work with do not have any toys and for them to be given a cuddly toy from a little girl in the UK was such a treat.

I shared with Laura and her Dad (Mike) what a blessing the bears were and how the children loved them so much, Mike came up with another idea. He is one of the leaders at the Kids club run by their church. He spoke with the children at Mighty Kids and they started to bring their soft toys in so that Mike and Laura could send them to the orphans of Project O.

We now recieve boxes of soft toys every couple of months and we love getting them.......more importantly our children here love to get them.

Such a simple idea from a little girl in England has made such a difference to these children here.

Thank you Laura for seeing a need and sharing it with others, now we have many happy little boys and girls who have a teddy to snuggle!

Thank you Mike for caring enough to get behind Laura and Project O.

And Thank you for all the children at Mighty Kids who gave your bears for an orphan. We belive every child should have a teddy bear!!!!!

Thembalihle our first Project O orphan.

One day 2 1/2 years ago I was walking through the valley with one of my friends. We were passing a small mud hut and noticed an elderly woman sitting outside on a blanket. In the Zulu culture you must greet people when you pass them so we slowed down and greeted the lady, as we talked with her i noticed a small child in the garbage dump that was next to the house. The surrounding houses and the Shabine (tavern) next to her mud hut throw all their waste into the pit. The little girl came out of the dump and she was carrying 2 apple cores. She lifts one to her mouth to take a bite when she notices Nthabiseng and myself talking with her grandmother, embarrassed she hides the apple cores behind her back.

Her grandmother was also embarrassed and explains that Thembalihle has lost her parents to AIDS and now it is just the 2 of them left, they are trying to survive on her pension but its just not enough for them and she cant even send Thembalihle to school. they go for days with nothing to eat.

I told Gogo (grandmother) that I would be back soon. We leave and when i am in the seclusion of my bathroom I break down, my heart breaks for the Gogo and her beautiful little granddaughter. I felt as though my heart was breaking into thousands of tiny pieces and the pain I felt for these two strangers took my breath away, it over whelmed me and I knew I had to do something.

As most kids do when they don't have the answers, I called my mum! I told her about my day and about Gogo and Thembalihle. What should I do? My mum and dad decided they they would help this little family, they became our 1st Project O sponsors and Thembalihle our first orphan!

For £19 a month my parents change a family's life. Now they have enough food to make it through each month and Thembalihle is going to school and doing great!! She is a very bright little girl and now has big dreams for her life.

Just £19 a month and a loving, faithful couple (I'm not bias) has changed their lives FOREVER.

Bike club, so much fun!

We are running a bike club every saturday morning in Maphephetaini- a rural community in the Valley of a Thousand Hills. Many of us take for granted the things that we grew up doing and those things that were made available to us. Bikes are another item on the long list of things that the children living in these remote communities will never have the chance of owning.

I remember when my little brother first learnt how to ride a bike......he was 4 years old and we were on holiday in america. there he was in his new Chicago Bears uniform riding up and down the street for hours until he got it right. The children that we work with will never have a chance to own their own bike let alone go to america and have a Chicago Bears uniform. I dont even remember learning to ride a bike! See how we take it for granted. we all know that at some point during our childhood we will learn to ride a bike, its a given!

Now Project O is giving these children the chance to learn something that every child should have the chance to learn....how to ride a bike.

Every saturday morning our staff arrive to the Chief's compound and are greated by about 100 children, all are waiting to go on a bike ride!
Each week a different group of children come and go on a bike ride, whne the ride is over they return to the compound for a life, moral, biblical lesson.

The club also promotes friendship, teamwork, fitness and hope.

We currently have 30 mountain bikes, with the hopes of building on that and getting 100 by the end of next year. We have had 4 national sports magazines across South Africa do write ups on the project and we are vrey excited about the impact that it is having on these children.

All this is possible thanks to Group 5, Sean's Power Cycles and Action Pad Print.

Quilts,Quilts,Quilts!

A few months ago a lady called BJ from Krazy Kwilts for Kool Kids contacted us and told us that her and her friends would like to make some quilts for our orphans. My mum makes the most fantastic patchwork quilts and because of this I LOVE quilts (cant make them myself, but i do love them!). So imagine my excitement when one morning I come down to the office to find it full of hand made quilts! Each one different from the next and each one had the name of the orphan that it had been made for!

Our staff have been taking the quilts to each child with their monthly supply of food that Project O supplies.

The children have been so grateful for their quilts and they have come just in time for winter!

I would like to thank BJ and the other ladies who took the time to design and sew these quilts. They are beautiful and I know that the children are so blessed by their quilts.

Hi every one, Vashti here.
We have decided to start this blog so that we can keep you all up to date with all the Project O news. So much happens on a daily basis and I am going to atempt to keep you all informed!
I am also going to post stories about the orphans that we work with and general information on how you can get involved with helping us to help the "least of these", the voiceless children of South Africa.
My aim is for this blog to be more personal than a website, please feel free to interact with me and ask me questions and give me any ideas that you have that you feel will help us to help them!
